Kobbie Mainoo’s equaliser raised the roof at Old Trafford before Harry Maguire won an extraordinary Europa League tie.
Kobbie Mainoo’s mother was in tears after Manchester United’s extraordinary Europa League quarter-final comeback against Lyon at Old Trafford.
Mainoo’s 120th-minute goal levelled the second leg at 4-4 and 6-6 on aggregate. A minute later, Harry Maguire rose to win the tie 5-4 in what was the highest-scoring European match at Old Trafford since United’s first, a 10-0 shellacking of Anderlecht in 1956.
After the full-time whistle, Mainoo’s mother shed tears and exclaimed, “I can’t believe it!”
Mainoo, who turns 20 on Saturday, scored his first goal at Old Trafford since the 3-2 win against Newcastle United in May on his third appearance back for United since recovering from a muscular injury.
The 19-year-old mimicked Joshua Zirkzee’s machine-gun firing celebration in tribute to the Dutch forward, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
Mainoo could make his first start since February in United’s Premier League home fixture against Wolves on Sunday. United coach Ruben Amorim confirmed he would rotate heavily in United’s remaining domestic fixtures as they prioritise the Europa League.
Amorim is set to blood more youngsters into the United team in the coming weeks after Harry Amass made his full debut against Newcastle United at the weekend.
“We need to be really focused on the Europa League and take a risk with the kids in the league,” Amorim said. “Fans have to understand that we have to focus on the Europa League.
“Today is a good feeling but tomorrow we start everything again, so we need to focus on the next game, to focus on the players, if they are fit to play.
“We have to take a risk and save some players. Because if you look at our season, the most important thing for everybody is Europa League.”
