Three people who were wanted by police have been arrested following a stand-off in Atherton.

Police attended Samuel Street at around 10am this morning (April 10) as they searched for two wanted men in the area.

Greater Manchester Police says officers arrived at a property where the occupants had locked themselves inside.

A stand-off developed between officers and those inside the building, with specialist officers and negotiators sent out to support police at the scene.

According to GMP, the incident was ‘brought to a safe and swift conclusion’, with no injuries reported.

Officers arrested two men, aged 31 and 21, on suspicion of kidnap, possession of a bladed article and recall to prison.

A woman, aged 22, was also arrested on suspicion of failing to appear at court.

Inspector Sam Davies, from GMP’s Wigan district, said: “We understand this event may have caused considerable concern to local members of the public as a large response from GMP was seen in the area to bring this matter to a safe conclusion, we do not believe there to be any threat to the wider community as this was an isolated incident.

“A scene will remain in place whilst an investigation continues and neighbourhood officers will remain in the area, they are there for you, if you have any concerns please come and speak to them.

“Additionally, if anyone has any information or footage if you were in and around Samuel Street, Wigan this morning, please get in touch.”

Councillor James Fish, independent member for Tyldesley and Mosley Common on Wigan Council, added: “Upon arrival, a stand-off developed between the occupants of the address and the attending officers, with the occupants barricading themselves inside the premises.

“The situation evolved rapidly and required the deployment of both local and specialist police resources.

“I understand this event may have drawn attention from local residents and stakeholders and may have caused concern.

“However, I can confirm that at no point was there any wider threat to the public. The incident was effectively contained and managed by officers on scene.”

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact GMP on 101, quoting log number 889 of April 10, 2025.

Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
