A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of threats to kill, failing to stop for police and dangerous driving
A wanted man who ‘tried to ram a police car’ was arrested in a back garden following a dramatic chase.
The 31-year-old was sniffed out by a police dog called Harley following the pursuit in Rochdale yesterday (Saturday). It came after a sergeant from Heywood Neighbourhood Team spotted the suspect, who was wanted in connection with making threats to kill, driving on Middleton Road.
The officer lost sight of the car but then went to the suspect’s home and found him in the vehicle. But the suspect spotted the police car behind him and tried to ram it with the officer still inside, GMP say.
He then fled, driving over a pedestrianised area as he tried to escape. After dumping the car he ran off, but found in a nearby back garden by the police dog.
He was searched and a large bag containing cannabis, snap bags and a phone was found. The man was also arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of drugs and remains in custody for questioning.
Insp Victoria Holdsworth from GMP’s Specialist Operations Branch, said: “The man tried to flee by attempting to ram a police car not thinking about the injuries this could have caused to the officer. Thanks to our canine capabilities in the force who responded immediately and located the man, we were able to make this arrest.
“Our highly trained police dogs are a vital part of our policing family in GMP, and police dogs and specially trained handlers are deployed across the force day and night to keep people safe.”
