Manchester United enjoyed one of their finest European nights against Lyon, coming back to win 5-4 in the final seconds of extra-time.

Manchester United fans who left Old Trafford early on Thursday night have gone viral on social media.

United were 4-2 down at half-time of the extended period and a small number of fans left the ground, which meant they missed one of the best comebacks in the club’s history.

Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty in the 114th minute, Kobbie Mainoo equalised in the 120th minute and Harry Maguire scored a minute later. Some supporters who left gathered outside the media entrance, where a TV is visible, and they watched Maguire’s winner through the window.

The fans who decided to leave the game early missed a remarkable comeback and joyous scenes at the full-time whistle, which will be remembered for years to come by those who stayed.

The supporters who left early were captured celebrating the winner in the Munich Tunnel.

United will play Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final of the Europa League and winning the competition would mean they qualify for the Champions League for next season.

After beating Lyon, Ruben Amorim spoke to reporters and said: “At half-time in extra time, was to change the positions. He continued: “The sound of the last two goals were amazing, that is something we can keep for the future. Was a good feeling but in the end of the game, you go to the semi-finals but you need to win it. We just need to focus on the next stage and try to win the competition.

“I think that’s why we like this sport so much and all the frustration that the coach has in this kind of season, the frustration, the bad moments, when you have moments like this, it’s all worth it.

“But then you finish, you calm down and we have a game on Sunday, we have to see all the players, if they are fit to play because we have to focus a lot on Europa League.

“I think these kind of moments can help a lot the players in this kind of season, this kind of context. They can create some connection with the fans and the players and we can forget for a few minutes what kind of a season we are having.

“But again, today is a good feeling but tomorrow we start everything again. So we need to focus on the next game, to focus on the players, if they are fit to play, we have to take a risk and save some players.”
