BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay scrambled to set the record straight after making an off-the-cuff admission about closeness to a partner while on-air
BBC Radio 2’s Vernon Kay made a wry confession as colleague Bobbie Pryor read out the Bank Holiday Weekend traffic and travel news on his Good Friday Show. Warning drivers not to get “too close” to other motorists on the road, the presenter added: “You don’t get too close to your partner that often”, as Bobbie dissolved into giggles.
“Don’t bring it up at work,” she advised. Vernon then desperately back-pedalled to insist he wasn’t dropping any hints about his own marriage to Tess Daly, saying: “I don’t mean myself, I mean in general, Bobbie!”
He added: “You watch people driving and they’re bumper-to-bumper – behave yourselves!” Echoing his words, Bobbie chipped in “Don’t get in my boot,” leading to more cheeky giggles from the pair.
Vernon regularly shares insights into his life with wife Tess and their daughters Phoebe and Amber. On a recent episode of his Radio 2 show, Vernon explained Tess often shows concern whenever he’s preparing to head into his garden shed.
The former Family Fortunes host said that when he begins to reach for the tools, Tess is standing at the front door, with an air of concern.
He told listeners: “It’s so funny. Whenever I go in the shed, I pull out a power tool. Strictly Come Dancing’s Tess Daly’s always stood at the front door. ‘Now, just please be careful’. She knows what I’m like.”
While Vernon is an experienced broadcaster, initially picking up work after a drunken dare from a mate saw him appearing on BBC1’s The Clothes Show in 2000, he’s a little accident-prone when it comes to practical tasks.
There is the odd mishap on screen too, though. Earlier this year, a live broadcast of The One Show collapsed into chaos after Vernon’s co-presenter Alex Jones lost an earring.
A minute or two later, the presenters were forced to apologise for guest Toni Collette’s “potty mouth” after she said “s**t” during their conversation live on-air.
After the award-winning Australian actress then uttered the word again, fellow-guests Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, and actress Naomi Ackie, struggled to contain their laughter.
Discussing the incident on his BBC Radio 2 show the following day Vernon, 50, said it was “absolute carnage” in the studio. He told listeners: “Last night’s The One Show was definitely not that perfect. It’s so funny, Ant and Dec are still just two mischievous young gentlemen.
“From the moment we went on air, Alex’s earring fell out and I’m messing around looking for the earring back.”
He added that he didn’t know how Watchdog presenter Matt Allwright managed to retain his composure: “It’s all serious, there’s absolute carnage going on around him, I don’t know how he kept a straight face.”
Vernon went on to say such unexpected moments are “what broadcasting is all about” and went on to praise Alex for the way she handled it. “Alex Jones is one of the best, she is without a doubt one of the best,” he added.
“She is the essence of cool, calm and collected, I mean I don’t know how we get on air, we’re both so laid-back. “We’re like, ‘Yeah it’ll be fine, it’ll be fine, it’s live telly, people understand’.”
