British holidaymakers heading to the Canaries are being told to brace themselves
UK tourists who are jetting off to the Canary Islands for the Easter break are being warned that a severe weather alert issued for two islands could disrupt their travel plans.
Aemet, Spain’s national weather agency, has given a yellow weather warning for severe rainfall in Lanzarote and Tenerife.
The alert comes into effect from 2pm on Saturday 12 April, and will remain in place until later the same evening.
Their website states that there is a 70% probability of up to 20mm of rainfall falling in under an hour in Lanzarote.
A less severe warning is in place for Tenerife, where a 40% probability of up to 15mm of rain is expected.
The extreme weather will mainly affect the northwest and inland areas of the metropolitan district of Tenerife, as well as the northern slopes of the island.
Earlier this week, an amber weather alert was issued for both Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Hail showers and heavy winds battered both holiday hotspots on Wednesday, 9 April, with thousands of holidaymakers from Britain affected.
The stormy conditions continued into Thursday, 10 April, with scattered showers and overcast conditions leaving many who were hoping to escape to the sun disappointed.
Authorities have urged residents and visitors in Tenerife and Lanzarote to exercise caution, particularly in mountainous or landslide-prone zones, as the heavy rainfall could trigger unstable conditions.
The Canary Islands are a popular destination for British sun-seekers.
The archipelago sees a significant influx of visitors around this time each year, especially during Easter Week.
Easter is an important holiday in Spain, and the Canary Islands experience higher tourist numbers during this time.
In 2023, the Canaries had a total of 16 million visitors. Tenerife alone attracts around 6 million tourists annually.
While Easter is a high season, it’s likely not as high as the peak summer months.
