People had to be rescued in a dinghy after a burst water main caused flooding in Didsbury. Residents were forced to flee their homes overnight after Borrowdale Crescent was deluged with water.

The main burst on Saturday afternoon (April 5).

Some homes will need extensive repair work to fix, residents said. Meanwhile others have seen their businesses disrupted due to the flooding.

Engineers for United Utilities were able to contain the leak in the early hours of Sunday morning. However, they have since had to dispatch more engineers to the road to carry out a long term repair.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, told the Manchester Evening News: “I had to be evacuated with my children, we had to be taken out by boat. It was just really traumatic.

“We had to be evacuated and the power had to go off. I had to go back into the house to get medication.

“The water was really high, it was past your knees. The lads were wading in and it was coming up to the top of their legs.”

They had to spend the night at a friend’s house, and returned the following day, adding: “I’m just coming back to assess the damage.”

He now faces lost business, and will need to replace the flooring in his garage, he said.

“It got into my garage, it’s gone under my floor. I just laid it over Christmas, now I’ll have to bring it up again or the place is going to stink. I got away lightly.”

He added: “It’s s***. I run a business from here, but not next week I’m not. I have 14 or 15 bookings next week. I can’t do anything while it’s like this.”

Engineers from United Utilities had been working to repair a small leak when the main burst. 30 homes were affected.

Another resident said: “It was halfway up my back garden. It was bad, I’ve been here over 40 years, I’ve never seen anything like it.”

In an update just after 5am this morning, United Utilities said: “Due to the complex nature of the repair we will need more hands on deck to help to fully resolve the issue. As soon as our teams arrive on site we will continue with the repair.

“All customers should have supply. Please be assured, our team are doing all they can and hope to have things back to normal as soon as possible.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience this is causing.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly after 5.05pm on Saturday 5 April, five fire appliances from across Greater Manchester were called to reports of flooding from a burst water main on Borrowdale Crescent, Didsbury, which has affected up to 30 nearby properties.

“We’d like to thank residents for their cooperation and patience at this time.”
