This Morning has paid tribute to their ‘kind and caring’ former co-star ahead of the anniversary of the young man’s death.

Matthew Lock passed away in 2023 at the age of 19 after sadly taking his own life.

Often appearing on the show to showcase the latest gadgets in the world of technology after testing them himself, Matthew’s death left his colleagues devastated.

On Thursday’s (April 17) episode of This Morning, Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond presented a segment titled ‘Remembering Matthew Lock’.

“We’re remembering one of our beloved This Morning family members today, 19-year-old Matthew Lock. Matthew first appeared on the show in 2020 and charmed the pants off us with his enthusiasm and love for gadgets.

“We often had him review everything from vacuum cleaners to phone cases,” Dermot said.

The duo were joined by his parents Richard and Christine Lock, who have been campaigning to raise awareness about ADHD and the increased suicide risk that comes with it.

Alison told them: “We absolutely adored your boy, we loved him.”

Dermot added: “He just had this passion, this enthusiasm. He had funny bones, he was kind and caring.

“We didn’t get to meet him an awful lot. We only met him a few times but he was a breath of fresh air.”

Matthew’s mum Christine said that her son ‘loved coming in’ to This Morning to showcase his love of technology.

“It was from an early age he started to love those things. He started to repair them and that sort of grew. He had an incredible ability to find what the problem was and fix it. A young engineer in the making, it grew and grew.

“He ended up with a collection of over 100 vacuums. His social media grew and the story got out there,” Richard said.

Dermot stated that Matthew’s passion was ‘unbounding’, describing him as ‘politically engaged’ and said he had the ‘rest of his life ahead of him’.

“He was caring and sensitive. That can sometimes be an ADHD trait, people being over sensitive. Basically emotional dysregulation can come into it,” Christine said.

She later added: “We need earlier diagnosis, and earlier screenings for a child as young as possible. When they’re going into secondary years and struggled in primary, they’re only going to struggle more.

“That’s when you’ve got to be organised, peer pressure increases. These kids want to fit in. You can be a risk taker with ADHD due to the impulsivity symptom…

“There’s higher risk taking behaviours they’ll take just to fit in… We don’t want to scare anyone, that made Matthew who he was. There’s no way he wanted to do what he did. However, the impulsivity and lack of being able to stop and think of the consequences, he’s followed that through.”
