Quick overview:
People are being urged to check their change for this old pound coin from 2014
A coin expert has urged people to look out for a rare two pound coin that is currently fetching more than £1,000 on eBay as coin collectors are “going crazy” for it.
A TikTok coin expert, known as Coin Collecting Wizard, posted a video about the rare coins. He opened the video with: “Do you wanna know how to turn £2 into £5,000? Then pay attention to this…”
The coin to look out for is a rare error version of the Lord Kitchener two pound coin that was released in 2014 to mark the centenary of WWI. Coin Collecting Wizard continued: “Coin collectors are going crazy for it.”
He explained: “Normally every two pound coin should have the words ‘two pound’ on the obverse side underneath the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. But some Lord Kitchener coins were accidentally struck without these words, reports the Mirror.
He went on to explain that this error makes the coin “super rare” and collectors are willing to pay a lot of money to get their hands on the coin. These rare two pound coins have been spotted being sold for £900 to £1,000 – or even higher if they go to auction.
Currently, there is one Lord Kitchener two pound coin listed on eBay for a whopping £4,586.72. The second highest price currently being listed is £1,026.71 also on eBay.
The 2014 Lord Kitchener two-pound coin has a mintage of 5,720,000 – meaning this number of coins were circulated in total. The coin will be distinctive when looking to see if you have it as it is the old pound coin shape and has a unique image.
As well as the Lord Kitchener two pound coin, Coin Collecting Wizard also advised that it is worth looking out for the Shakespeare skull £2 coin. But it needs to feature a mistake along the edge of the coin to be worth extra.
The coin is supposed to say, “what a piece of work is a man”, which is a phrase from Hamlet. Instead some of the coins say, “for king and country” which was only meant to appear on some First World War commemorative coins.
Coin Collecting Wizard said: “You could come across this Shakespeare skull £2 coin from 2016 that also has a rare error. Some have the wrong edge inscription that says ‘for king and country’ instead of ‘what a piece of work is a man’.
“A very cool error to find and some easy money”.
This coin has been known to sell for over £200 in the past but at the time of reporting some of these coins were listed on eBay for more than £500.
