Six years ago Bury FC were kicked out of the football league.

It was the darkest day in the club’s 140 year history. But on Saturday the phoenix club could kickstart a remarkable rise from the flames by winning the league title.

The Shakers need just one point from their home game against Burscough Athletic to be crowned North West Counties League Premier Division champions. Gigg Lane is expected to be packed for the biggest game since the club reformed, with more than 7,000 tickets already sold.

It would be just reward for a team that have been on a remarkable run of form since the New Year, winning 14 games on the trot, and for a fanbase who have stood by their club through thick and thin.

In a message to fans a club spokesperson said: “It all comes down to this. One game. One point. And we’re champions.

“Let’s pack out Gigg Lane. Let’s make it loud. Let’s turn the ground into a blue and white cauldron of noise and passion. One big ask: Whatever happens, please stay off the pitch at full time. We know how much this means — but we promise, if we do it, the players and the trophy will come to you. Let’s celebrate together, the right way.“So bring the energy. Bring the noise. Bring the belief. Let’s finish this journey in style and roar the lads over the line.”
