Simon Cowell has also offered to take a lie detector test to quash any fix claims after an audience member begged for an opportunity to audition.

During Saturday night’s episode, April 19, the final week of auditions, an audience member stood up and said: “Simon, Simon, 19 years I’ve tried to get in front of you. Can you give me an opportunity?” After asking: “Is this a wind up?”, Simon decided to let the man audition.

Max Fox, a local singer, said it was his “dream” to sing in front of Simon Cowell. After the whole back and forth, he returned to the Blackpool stage to sing a rendition of Frank Sinatra’s My Way, impressing the judges and earning himself the final Golden Buzzer of the series.

Later, Simon denied claims that the interaction was set up. The 65-year-old said: “I think I should be wired to a lie detector machine in the future to prove I’m speaking the truth because when something like this happens people instantly shout fix.

“In this case do you really think I could be bothered to plant someone in the audience? No. But that’s exactly what happened.”

Holden insisted it had not been a stunt, saying: “I know that’s what people will say, but I promise it wasn’t. It was like a moment from a movie. This guy was in the audience and kept putting his hand up, asking Simon to let him sing.

“Eventually Simon agreed, so he got up – and was a knockout. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and had to press the golden buzzer.

“We knew nothing about him, he just got in the audience that day and talked his way on stage. I have so much respect for him taking his shot when he got it.

“He’s got balls, that’s for sure. In auditions, we don’t know what to expect from one moment to the next.”

This was the first time that a member of the audience has managed to get an audition on ITV Britain’s Got Talent. From next week, Saturday 26 April, Britain’s Got Talent live shows will start with the semi-finals.
