Andre Onana’s horror show for Manchester United in Lyon means Ruben Amorim now has a big decision to make over his goalkeeper.

Onana was culpable for both goals as Rayan Cherki grabbed a last-gasp equaliser for Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final in France.

It means United return to Old Trafford for next week’s second leg with a 2-2 draw to build on, rather than a 2-1 lead to protect, as goals from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee were cancelled out by Thiago Almada and Cherki strikes.

Having stoked up the pre-match build-up by suggesting United were ‘way better’ than their opponents, before engaging in a war of words with Lyon’s ex-United midfielder Nemanja Matic, Onana had to back up his confidence on the pitch.

But he misjudged Almada’s free-kick in the first half and parried an effort into Cherki’s path in the second half to cost his team a priceless win away from home.

The pressure is growing on the Cameroon international after a series of high-profile errors this term and there is a genuine question over whether Amorim drops him for Sunday’s trip to Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Turkey international Altay Bayindir is on standby but memories of his error-strewn display in the Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Tottenham still linger.

As we build towards Sunday’s game, we will have every angle covered in the build-up right here at the Manchester Evening News.
