Sandra Bullock’s hilarious final film before her current ‘career break’ is airing on TV tonight (Monday, April 14) for free across the UK.

The 60-year-old is one of the most popular movie stars of her generation, making her debut in the 1987 thriller Hangman.

It was the 1990s that saw Bullock become a household name, delivering memorable performances in Demolition Man, Speed, A Time to Kill and Hope Floats.

Despite initially proving herself as a dramatic force, Bullock quickly showed off her comedic chops in Miss Congeniality, Two Weeks Notice, The Proposal and The Heat.

While her priority remained making thrillers such as Bird Box and Gravity, the Oscar winner returned to the world of comedy in 2022.

Directed by brothers Aaron and Adam Nee, The Lost City follows a romance novelist (played by Bullock) and her cover model (Channing Tatum), who must escape a billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) who wants them to find a lost ancient burial chamber described in one of her books.

In a film that resembles the Michael Douglas classic Romancing the Stone, Bullock and Tatum’s chemistry and offbeat humour made this a big success.

Recent years have seen romcoms struggling to make money at the box office, with the majority of them benign dumped on streaming services.

Boasting a score of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Lost City grossed over $190 million worldwide against a $68 million budget.

Sadly for fans hoping a sequel would have come to fruition by now, Bullock hasn’t made any movies in the last three years.

Speaking to Movieweb about her decision, Bullock said: “I don’t want to be beholden to anyone’s schedule other than my own. I’m so burnt out. I’m so tired, and I’m so not capable of making healthy, smart decisions and I know it…

“Work has always been steady for me, and I’ve been so lucky. I realized it possibly was becoming my crutch. It was like opening up a fridge all the time and looking for something that was never in the fridge.

“I said to myself, ‘Stop looking for it here because it doesn’t exist here. You already have it; establish it, find it and be OK not having work to validate you’.”

The Lost City airs at 9pm on Monday, April 14 on Film 4 and channel4.com
