More errors from Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana cost the team dear against Lyon in the Europa League, cancelling out efforts from both Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee – and calls from fans in The Manchester Evening News comments section to drop or transfer Onana are growing.

Onana suffered a horrible night away at Lyon, being at fault for letting in a Thiago Almada cross which bounced high into the net. Another error late on allowed young France star Rayan Cherki to level the scores, meaning that Yoro’s goal at the stroke of half-time and Zirkzee’s potential winner went to waste – in one way.

The goalkeeper had been engaged in a war of words with ex-United man Nemanja Matic, now playing for Lyon, in the run-up to the game. Matic had called him the worst goalkeeper in United history, and Onana had hit back with: “At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”

He needed a strong game to back up wading into the incident with Matic, and ended up being shown up on the night. Ruben Amorim said that he won’t bring up it with Onana, saying: “If you play football, you play a lot of games, you can make mistakes. If you look at the season, I make more mistakes than them during these last games and these last months. The other thing is we have one more game to change everything and that should be our focus.”

Those high-profile incidents mean that some fans can see the end of the road for Onana. Reader Tonyunited says: “Every game we play until the end of the season, the opposing fans will be on his back, and it wouldn’t surprise me if more mistakes are going to happen.”

Commenter Tomox9 writes: “Onana will send Amorin packing, same thing I said about [Erik] ten Hag. You guys refused to drop Onana. Fans cried weekly to play [Altay] Bayindir.”

Jungle Jerry says: “Can’t blame Amorim for not wanting to talk badly about his players, but he should seriously consider dropping Onana for Bayindir or [Tom] Heaton for the rest of the season. He must also have a goalkeeper on the shopping list for he of all people should know that Onana is NOT good enough!”

Judge02 writes: “I think it’s high time Amorim should start rotating his goalkeepers. Onana has so many errors that lead to goals. United are better than they were yesterday, but Onana wastes the players’ effort, and I think Amorim has to be blamed, because he has different goalkeepers but sticks only to Onana.”

Daz61 says: “Onana doesn’t have any grasp of impending danger. Always acts surprised when he’s called on.”

Casey4188 adds: “Paulo Fonseca played his card well by benching Matic, Amorim should have done the same and played Bayindir in goal.”

1954brad writes: “Onana almost single-handedly knocked us out of the Champions League last season, and if Amorim continues to play him he will do the same in this competition. We need to spend big this summer and Champions League is essential, a ‘keeper and striker are absolute priorities to sign.”
