Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim showed his appreciation of Matheus Cunha at half-time of the Premier League clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

This week, Cunha has been linked with a move to Old Trafford as his future in the West Midlands remains up in the air. The Brazilian forward has been a revelation for Wolves this season despite the Molineux club struggling towards the bottom of the table.

Cunha’s 14 goals in 27 Premier League appearances have lifted Wanderers away from danger with their survival in the top flight all but secured. However, the 25-year-old has hinted that he may now be open to leaving the club.

The striker, who has also played in the Bundesliga and La Liga, explained that he was the subject of interest in the January transfer window but he rejected approaches. His mindset behind this was that he did not want to leave Wolves when they are struggling.

He also explained in an interview that he had told management that he wants to fighting for trophies but has insisted that this was not a ‘come and get me plea’.

Even so, a number of clubs are now being linked with Cunha this summer, especially because of the £62.5m release clause in his contract.

United are one of those teams and perhaps the fact Cunha can play in numerous positions could mean that he stands out ahead of most. Whether the Reds’ interest becomes more than just hypothetical remains to be seen, but what is clear is that Amorim is a fan of the forward.

As the players headed down the tunnel at Old Trafford with the scores goalless at the break, Amorim could be seen tapping the side of Cunha’s head in an affectionate manner.

While this could be just a friendly greeting, it is rare for opposition managers and players to interact at half-time and it at least recognises the esteem Amorim holds the player in.

If Cunha was to be a target for United, Wolves would be in a strong position to demand his full release clause before letting him leave. He is currently under contract until 2029 and with his club’s status in the Premier League all but secured for another season, it is unlikely that the Reds will be able to negotiate a cut-price deal.
