Quick overview:
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim dropped Andre Onana from the squad ahead of their trip to Newcastle in the Premier League
Manchester United legend Roy Keane thinks Andre Onana will be coming back into the team for Thursday’s Europa League clash with Lyon after being dropped for the trip to Newcastle United on Sunday.
MEN Sport reported on Sunday morning that Onana would not be travelling to Newcastle for the Premier League game in the North East. In his place, Altay Bayindir has made his first appearance in the English top flight.
Prior to kick-off, Keane defended Ruben Amorim’s decision to drop Onana from the squad, telling Kelly Cates on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday: “It has not been easy – the goalkeeper position is a huge one. This goalkeeper is getting an opportunity.
“He played against Spurs earlier in the season, made a mistake himself, but the manager has made it clear it is for one game and that is not a bad thing. If you are at Newcastle’s point of view, you are looking at this goalkeeper and thinking is he up to speed and can you get some shots at him early.
“He is a decent ‘keeper but I think it is good to give Onana a couple of days off, recharge the batteries again physically and mentally. I have no doubt in my mind that he [Onana] will play in midweek for them in Europe because that is a huge game for them.”
While Keane was giving his verdict on the Onana situation, Sky was showing footage of Vital putting Bayindir through his warm-up pre-match.
After Les Ferdinand had agreed with Keane’s analysis, the club’s former captain added: “Saying about [testing the goalkeeper] I think I could have been doing the drill he [Bayindir] has just been doing.
“He is not exactly being tested in that warm-up. I could do that myself.”
Surprisingly, this is not the first time that Vital has been at the centre of conversation this season. Following the victory over Fulham in the Premier League, Amorim told reporters that he would rather start the 63-year-old on the bench before a player who does not try his hardest in training.
The insinuation was that Amorim was referring to Marcus Rashford, who had a fallout with the manager after being dropped for the Manchester derby in December.
