Rory McIlroy won the Masters for the first time in his career on Sunday after beating Justin Rose in a play-off and the Northern Irishman has now shared an emotional message

Rory McIlroy has taken to social media with an inspirational message days after clinching his maiden Masters triumph.

The 35-year-old, a Manchester United fan, emerged victorious at Augusta National on Sunday when he overcame Justin Rose in a play-off, after they both finished tied on 11-under par after the final round.

With this victory, McIlroy inscribed his name as only the sixth men’s golfer to accomplish the grand slam, securing all four major titles.

He now finds his name among golfing legends Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tiger Woods – each having achieved this remarkable feat.

This win marked nearly eleven years since McIlroy’s previous major win at the 2014 PGA Championship. Three days after securing the green jacket, McIlroy posted another heartfelt message to his 3.4million followers, reports the Liverpool Echo.

On Instagram, he shared a montage featuring snapshots from his golf career and highlights from the past week’s tournament, rounded off with various interviews by McIlroy and underscored by Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’.

McIlroy’s caption accompanying the video stated: “Never give up on your dreams. Keep coming back. Keep working hard.”

The victory at Augusta follows hot on the heels of another play-off success in March, where he emerged victorious at TPC Sawgrass in the Players Tournament.

Looking forward, McIlroy will set his sights on further glory at the year’s remaining three major championships, starting with next month’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. That will be followed by the US Open at Oakmont in June, with the final major of the year taking place at .Royal Portrush with The Open in July.
