Manchester United fan Rory McIlroy has sent a message to his team after claiming the Masters at Augusta on Sunday.

Rory McIlroy has issued a message to Manchester United after claiming a historic victory at the Masters on Sunday.

The Northern Irishman completed the Grand Slam of golf majors in Augusta after squeaking past Justin Rose in a playoff. McIlroy became just the sixth man to achieve a sweep of golf’s major titles and the first to do so since Tiger Woods in 2000.

The 35-year-old came back after squandering a four-shot lead ahead of the final round at The Masters to secure his maiden Green Jacket. Mcllroy’s historic win came 11 years on from his previous major title at the 2014 PGA Championship.

Mcllroy is a well-known United fan and celebrated his Open win in 2014 by taking the trophy to Old Trafford to showcase in front of the supporters. Following his victory on Sunday, the golfer was asked if he would do the same with his new green jacket and McIlroy took the opportunity to make light of his club’s current form.

“If it can inspire some better play, absolutely,” he said. McIlroy’s comments came just hours after his team suffered a 14th Premier League defeat of the season.

The Reds were well beaten at Newcastle as Ruben Amorm’s side fell to a 4-1 defeat at St James’ Park. Amorim accused his United players of collapsing in the second half of Sunday’s defeat.

“Yeah, when we suffer the second goal in the beginning of the second half we went down and we need to be better in these moments,” the Portuguese said, “we need to control it.

“They are already a really, really good team but the mistakes we made during the game helped the team to win confidence and win the game.

“We need to accept that (the lowest points tally) and to move forward and try to do things so much better in the future so we don’t have this kind of season. And then you can see some goals: they were doing high pressure and we lose the possession in some moments and some spaces that we cannot lose the possession.

“So we need to improve in a lot of things and our position is a reflection of our performances this season.”
