Here’s what you need to know:
Reaction to Manchester United’s dramatic Europa League victory over Lyon at Old Trafford with penalty drama in the final minutes
Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Savage were at odds over a non-penalty wrapped up in Manchester United’s dramatic highly dramatic Europa League victory over Lyon.
Old Trafford was left stunned when their French opposition came from two goals down on the night to take the quarter final to extra-time, and even more so when Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette struck to give Man United their own two-goal mountain to climb with 10 minutes left.
Then the unimaginable happened – a fightback that will go down in folklore. Bruno Fernandes first made good of an opportunity from 12 yards after Casemiro was fouled in the penalty area.
Desperate to not exit, Man United believed they should have had another penalty when Harry Maguire contested a deep cross. He went to ground gestating over an apparent shirt pull whilst Fernandes complained directly to referee Sandro Scharer, and in the TNT Sports commentary booth it sprung a disagreement between Ferdinand and Savage.
“He’s got a hold of his shirt there, you know? I wanna see that,” shouted the former whereas the latter with only one look definitively concluded: “Not a penalty.”
Seeing a replay Ferdinand complained: “He’s got his shirt?! Look! He’s got a handful of his shirt! [VAR has] gotta look at it, surely?”
Unfazed, Savage just retorted: “No, it’s not a penalty! “Harry has got his [shirt] as well!”
That seemed to bring the debate to an abrupt end – that and the fact Scharer and his VAR team glossed over the incident.
And so too did Man United, who went on to complete the most unlikely of comebacks.
Kobbie Mainoo, who had come from the bench in the 86th minute, levelled up at 4-4 on the night and 6-6 on aggregate in the 120th minute of play.
Five additional minutes were locked in but it took only a single one for Casemiro to float another cross into the 18-yard box which was met by Maguire, again up from the back, and his headed-attempt sailed beyond Lucas Perri to send Man United through to the Europa League semi-finals.
This sets Ruben Amorim’s men up for a two-legged clash with Athletic Bilbao, who have just eliminated Rangers in the current round.
