Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has suggested that Manchester United were lucky to play over half an hour against 10-men Lyon on Thursday night.

United produced one of their best ever European comebacks at Old Trafford in the Europa League quarter-final with a 7-6 aggregate win over the Ligue 1 side. Harry Maguire headed in a dramatic winner in extra-time injury-time after United came from 6-4 down in the space of six minutes.

Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette had put Lyon two goals ahead with 10 minutes of extra-time left to play before Bruno Fernandes halved the deficit from the penalty spot. Kobbie Mainoo curled in an equaliser past Lucas Perri before makeshift centre-forward Maguire completed the comeback.

The win keeps United’s season alive setting up a semi-final against Athletic Bilbao. “Even when it was 3-2, we felt like we’d have chances to come back into it,” Maguire said.

“As soon as we got the fourth I felt like there’d be another chance and it fell to myself and thankfully I put it in the back of the net and it was an amazing feeling.”

United were staring a humiliating exit in the 110th minute dead in the face, 4-2 down against 10-men after Corentin Tolisso was sent off for a second yellow card in the 89th minute. The midfielder was sent off for tripping Leny Yoro down the right as United looked to counter their opponents.

Replays showed that Yoro had run past Tolisso before tumbling to the ground. However, Clattenburg has criticised referee Sandro Schaerer’s decision in such a big game.

“The Tolisso red card is a ridiculous decision,” he told United in Focus. “To receive a yellow card in this situation was for stopping a promising attack and this was not the case as there was a covering defender who could easily play the ball.

“Watching another angle, I am not sure there was much contact either to award a foul. Therefore Manchester United have got lucky in this decision.

“Unfortunately VAR cannot interfere on a second yellow card but will raise the argument on why not when such decision is clearly wrong.”
