Ruben Amorim praised Harry Amass’ impact on his first start for Manchester United after throwing the teenager in at the deep end against a rampant Newcastle at St James’ Park.

The 18-year-old was making just his second senior appearance as Amorim rang the changes ahead of Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford, lasting 55 minutes of the 4-1 defeat to Champions League-chasing Newcastle.

Amass held his own against the pace of Jacob Murphy and Amorim pointed out the Newcastle winger’s speed during his post-match assessment of the wing-back’s display.

He made a couple of positive attacking runs as well and looked assured despite only turning 18 last month. Amorim was happy with how he coped in a red hot atmosphere and now wants to help unlock his full potential.

“I think he did quite well,” said the United head coach.

“He caught a player that is really fast, he debuted in maybe one of the hardest stadiums with one team that is in a good moment. I think he did really well. He needs to continue and we need to help all these young kids to perform in a higher level.”

Amass had been around the first-team squad for more than a year before making his debut as a substitute in the 3-0 win against Leicester City a month ago.

Despite praising the efforts of Amass, Amorim struggled to pick out any other positives on a dismal day on Tyneside. Although United’s focus this week is on Lyon, their confidence took a battering during the 4-1 defeat.

Alejandro Garnacho had cancelled out Sandro Tonali’s opener but United collapsed after the break as Harvey Barnes scored twice and Bruno Guimaraes put the icing on the cake.

“It is really difficult to look at the best things. The best thing is to focus on the next one,” said Amorim.

“Analyse this one, but it is really hard to be here after this result and try to see. Maybe in a few days I will watch the game and try to take that but in this moment it is really hard to have any feeling of a good feeling about the game.”
