Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has dubbed Wolves playmaker Matheus Cunha “real quality” ahead of his likely departure in the summer.

Cunha has been in talismanic form for Wolves this season, scoring 16 goals in 30 games to preserve their top-flight status for an eighth successive season.

The 25-year-old signed a new contract in January but it includes a £62.5million release clause and Cunha has already outlined his intention to leave Molineux in the summer.

Cunha scored the winning goal against United on Boxing Day and he has been linked with a move to Amorim’s side. Wolves operate in the same 3-4-2-1 system as United under Amorim’s compatriot, Vitor Pereira, with Cunha as one of the two playmakers behind the striker.

Pereira was in the Old Trafford directors’ box for United’s uproarious 5-4 Europa League victory over Lyon three days before Wolves visit the stadium. “I think he’s doing an amazing job,” Amorim said of Pereira.

“He’s playing a 3-4-3, he’s doing quite well! He’s changing some players, he has real quality players – Cunha and all these guys, they have real quality. They are fresh.

“So we know it’s going to be a tough match and we are going to need a lot from our supporters. I know it is a bad thing to ask anything this season from our fans but we need them on Sunday.”

When pressed on Cunha and possible interest from United, Amorim replied: “I just gave the example because I remembered about Matheus. He’s scoring a lot of goals. Just that.”
