Rasmus Hojlund has struggled with “pressure” at Manchester United this season.

Hojlund scored 16 goals in all competitions during his first campaign in Manchester, but he missed the start of the new season with a hamstring injury and failed to fire when he returned.

The pressure of leading the attack for United has appeared to burden Hojlund and he has just three goals in the Premier League. Hojlund has five goals in the Europa League, although he fluffed a big opportunity in the first half against Lyon on Thursday night and was disappointing again.

Hojlund has the number nine shirt at United, but his finishing has been poor at times this season, and Ruben Amorim is set to sign a new striker in the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old has been heavily scrutinised this term and recently admitted he has struggled.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Hojlund said: “It’s short-term, in terms of like we know what this football club means, and the DNA is so sewn into the shirt and we know what it means.

“I wouldn’t have signed here if I didn’t know that. I wouldn’t have taken the number nine shirt in the summer if I didn’t think I wanted to have that sort of pressure.

“I think, with it not being the best season, I’ve also struggled with it at some point. But again, it’s about finding your way and keep doing the things that got you here, but also working on the things you think you should improve, and that’s what I’m always trying to do.

“I’m young, I’ve still got loads of time and just trying to better really, that’s my target.”

Hojlund was also asked about Amorim and said: “He is very passionate and he wants to improve everybody. You can see that he has really got the heart for wanting to improve and be better.

“You can see that every day. He’s very passionate. He wants to bring this club back where it belongs, and I think that is his main quality, if you can say that. He just wants to be better and just be the best version of him being a manager.”

Hojlund ended a 21-game goal drought with a brilliant finish against Leicester before the international break and built on that performance by scoring for Denmark against Portugal.

When the Premier League resumed, Hojlund was dropped to the bench against Nottingham Forest.
