Thomas Frank has hinted Brentford could re-sign Christian Eriksen from Manchester United.

Eriksen has made 17 starts in all competitions this term and his contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign, which led Ajax to confirm they would be interested in signing him last month.

United signed Eriksen on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. The midfielder had just spent a season with Brentford after recovering from a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, and Erik ten Hag signed him to start alongside Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes for his first season in charge at United.

Eriksen developed a formidable partnership with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in the first half of his first campaign in Manchester, but he’s been in and out of the starting team ever since.

Brentford manager Frank still has a strong relationship with Eriksen and Danish outlet TV2 Sport asked him about the possibility of signing the 33-year-old when his United contract ends.

“Christian is a fantastic player, probably the best Danish player in recent times, and I think we saw most recently against Portugal that he did really well, and he is still in a good place,” said Frank.

“There is no doubt that Christian wants to play some more. He had a fantastic time when he was with us. At least that’s how it was, from our side, and that’s what I know he’s expressed.

“I’m open to all players, and of course, there are lots of things that come into play whether someone comes in or not. But let me put it this way: Nothing is closed.”

Frank was asked whether Brentford have spoken to Eriksen’s camp and responded: “It’s clear that I can’t be that specific one way or the other. But let me put it this way: Nothing is closed.”

Eriksen recently spoke about his future with TV2 Sport and said: “I haven’t been told anything [United contract] and since I haven’t, I assume the collaboration will end.

“That’s how I interpret it. Everyone knows my contract is expiring, so I expect there’s only one way this will go. I haven’t thought much about it. In my mind, I’m prepared to find something new. What that will be, I haven’t decided yet.

“I don’t have anything specific that I really want to try, so I’ll see what comes along and what fits me and my family.”

United are planning for squad departures to reach double digits this summer.
