Manchester City will reportedly consider replacing Kevin De Bruyne with Florian Wirtz or Morgan Gibbs-White during the summer transfer window.

They are two reputed potential candidates among the options that City will contemplate when exploring a midfield addition.

However, despite De Bruyne announcing his departure last week, it is said there is no intention to prioritise selecting transfer targets at this stage. That appears to be because Hugo Viana only started work this week, as the transition period from Txiki Begiristain to the new football director has just begun.

External solutions, such as Phil Foden, are also purported possibilities. The Athletic acknowledges such a scenario could instead see City make a signing in alternative areas of the attack, but no decision either way is said to have happened yet.

Gibbs-White impressed for Nottingham Forest against City when they played early last month, assisting Callum Hodson-Odoi for the game’s only goal.

That is one of nine times the midfielder has set up his team-mate in the Premier League this season, alongside scoring himself on five occasions.

Since signing for Forest following their promotion from the Championship, Gibbs-White has managed at least five goals and eight assists across his three seasons in the East Midlands.

Last term’s six and ten across all competitions is his best, and the midfielder could yet eclipse those totals over the next two months.

Wirtz, meanwhile, has plenty of parallels to the De Bruyne that City signed from Wolfsburg a decade ago.

He was the reigning Bundesliga Player of the Year when moving to Manchester in 2015, an honour Wirtz won last season. De Bruyne also won the German Cup and Super Cup in Germany, which Wirtz did last year with Leverkusen alongside their triumph in the league.
