One of the best films of films of the decade is airing on TV on Easter Sunday (Sunday, April 20) for free across the UK.

Two years ago marked one of the finest film years of recent times, with something being released in cinemas for everyone.

In a year where Oppenheimer and Barbie came out on the same day, cinemas were enjoying their best year since the pandemic threatened the movie industry.

Families seeking a break got to go see The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Wonka, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Auteur directors Martin Scorsese, Yorgos Lanthimos, Alexander Payne and Jonathan Glazer were all back with some of their finest works to date.

However, one film that continues to rise in status is the iconic Sofia Coppola’s biographical drama Priscilla.

Based on 1985 memoir Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley, who serves as an executive producer for the film, Priscilla follows her as a teenager as she enters a romantic relationship with Elvis Presley.

Starring Alien Romulus’ Cailee Spaeny and Euphoria’s Jacob Elordi, Priscilla pulls no punches in its depiction of one of the most talked about relationships of all time.

While Baz Luhrmann’s depiction of the ‘King of Rock and Roll’ was a dazzling insight into his career the year prior, Priscilla focuses solely on the late singer’s complicated love affair.

Beginning with a 24-year-old Elvis meeting Priscilla, who was 14 at the time, the film dives inside their marriage and the impact fame can have on people.

The bulk of the film is set in Graceland, with Priscilla debating if she made a mistake giving her heart to a man who at the time was at an unprecedented level of fame.

The star of the show is Spaeny, whose tender performance landed her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

After failing to reach her lofty heights with 2020’s On The Rocks, Priscilla marked a mainstream comeback for the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola and the director of Lost in Translation.

Speaking to Deadline about how she handled making the film, Coppola said to Deadline: “I don’t want to speak for her, but I think it was such a different time that the terminology we use today wasn’t even used. She doesn’t look back on the experience in any kind of damaging way.

“She had a full relationship with him, they were married, and they had a child. She still looks at it as the great love of her life. I was just so interested in being at that point in life where you’re trying to form your identity, and then to be with someone with such a strong opinion of how a woman should be.

“I wanted to focus on the struggles and pressure I felt she must have been under to be this ideal woman. And even when she’s nine months pregnant, she was riding motorcycles and trying to be fun for Elvis, really invested in being his ideal woman.”

Priscilla airs on BBC Two and the BBC iPlayer on Easter Sunday, April 20, at 10pm
