One of the most popular comedies of the 90s is airing on TV tonight, Monday April 7 across the country for free. The 1992 film was one of the most financially successful comedies of its decade and was the most rented film of 1993 in the United States.

The American musical crime comedy, directed by Emile Ardolino and written by Paul Rudnick, saw such popularity when it was released it spawned a franchise, with a sequel being released in 1993 and a third film currently in development for Disney+.

Sister Act is viewed as a classic comedy film amongst many fans, not least due to Whoopi Goldberg’s iconic role as the film’s star.

Goldberg – Sister Mary Clarence in the comedy – stars as a casino singer who goes into hiding at a convent after witnessing her mobster boyfriend commit a murder.

Placed on witness protection in a convent, the film centres around her improving the choir at the church.

Starting the film as a lively lounge singer performing under the name of Deloris Wilson in Nevada, the star of the comedy tries to upend the quiet lives of the resident sisters once she moves to the convent.

In an effort to keep her out of trouble, they assign Deloris to the convent’s choir – an ensemble that she soon turns into a vibrant and soulful act that gains widespread attention.

The film follows Deloris’ journey at the convent leading the choir, as well as her own her personal development.

After putting her musical background and knowledge into practice with the choir, she soon turns it into a vibrant and soulful act that gains widespread attention.

But Deloris faces struggles along the way – including almost breaking her witness protection anonymity by appearing on live TV.

Sister Act’s popularity has also seen it transformed into a stage musical performance, including various shows at Manchester’s Palace Theatre over the last few years.
