Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was happy to see his players stick to their principles as they beat Crystal Palace 5-2
Pep Guardiola credited his Manchester City players with keeping calm and carrying on when it all went wrong against Crystal Palace. The Blues quickly fell 2-0 down to the South London side but rallied emphatically to pick up an important three points.
City’s manager had billed this game as one of seven finals standing between the Blues and Champions League football next season, but a positive start was wiped out when goals from Eberechi Eze and Chris Richards crashed the party at the Etihad. Kevin De Bruyne got the stadium going again by scoring from a direct free-kick and City went on to record a big win.
Guardiola saw a few anxious moments from his side after conceding the second goal, with Ismaila Sarr missing a good chance to add a third and Eze then having a goal ruled out for a close offside. Despite that, he also witnessed his team create a lot of chances by sticking to the formula that has brought them so much success.
“Not happy [at 2-0]. I tried to be calm,” he said.
“We were not playing bad. At 2-0 we lost a little bit, we wanted to attack more quickly and when that happens against the pace of Sarr, Eze, Munoz and Mateta it’s so difficult but after the goal from Kevin with the momentum we scored two and in the second part we adjust a few things for the second half.
“You have to move the team left, right, left right, right left. If you want to attack quicker, you are in trouble. With that, look how many chances we created.
“We scored five but I remember three from McAtee in front of the keeper, one from Kevin, two from Omar that were clear chances in front of the keeper. That is the way we have done it for many years and the way we have to do.
“Run, solidarity again, since the Bournemouth game we are back in those terms. The way we played at Old Trafford was not good but the spirit was there.
“It was not good because we were not in the position but today we were. That’s who we can find the players who can make the difference.
“Gundogan was extraordinary today so it’s a good weekend for all of us.”
