Following a successful trial in 2019, Next is seemingly the only high street retailer offering ‘odd’ sizes including 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17

During my countless hours spent in the fitting rooms of high street fashion stores, the one comment I’ve heard time and again is ‘I need an in-between size’. There’s nothing more frustrating than finding one size too big and the next size down too small.

But this week, I noticed that one popular retailer stocks ‘Goldilocks’ sizes in some of their jeans, and frankly, it’s a stroke of genius that more brands should start doing. Fashion favourite Next not only offers many of their trousers in three lengths – petite, regular and tall – but earlier this week, I noticed that they also stock ‘in between’ sizes, including sizes 9, 11, 13,15 and 17.

One such pair is the Bleach Dart Detail Barrel 100% Cotton Jeans, which come in at £45. They’re made from a pure cotton denim, coming with a classic five-pocket design and unique arched leg shape.

The fashion crowd has turned its attention to the barrel leg in recent months, so they’re seriously on trend, with retailers like River Island also stocking their own version. They’re generally considered flattering for hourglass, pear, and curvy body types, but can also work for those with a slim or athletic build, helping to add volume and proportion.

Seriously versatile, you can style them up or down as you please, from a vest top and oversized shirt for a summery look, to a knit for the chillier days. The Next jeans come in three lengths, ranging from sizes 6-22, however, the in-between sizes are only available in the regular length version.

Shoppers have praised the jeans for being ‘well fitting’, with one commenting: “Look and feel amazing on. Great value for money.” Another added: “Well fitting jeans, soft. They are petite (which I am not) but makes them the perfect length for what I was after.”

A third added: “I love the design and detail but the waist was far too tight for me so had to return. A bigger size would mean the legs were enormous.” This could be because the 100% cotton rigid denim has no stretch and will naturally be a little snug at first, but Next says it ‘will ease with wear allowing for the perfect fit’.

“Great jeans – super stylish,” wrote a fourth shopper. “Reasonable quality and a reasonable price. Bought two pairs that were very similar but I returned this colour in favour of a black pair.”

Next became the first retailer to trial in-between sizes in their jeans back in 2019, so while it’s not necessarily a new development, it’s one seemingly few people are yet to be aware of. But what’s perhaps most surprising is that more stores have not followed suit. Some, like Marks and Spencer, do offer multiple lengths to be more inclusive, while others like Simply Be target a plus-sized audience, with sizes up to 32 and 34 in some cases.

At the time of the launch, Next said in a press release: “Next are always looking for ways to help women feel amazing in what they wear. After spending time with our customers and listening to their feedback, we have decided to trial in-between sizes in some of our favourite jeans and tailoring pieces to ensure that we are offering them the best fit possible.”
