Warning: This article may contain spoilers for Black Mirror Series 7
Black Mirror fans have admitted to be “mind blown” after watching the new season and one episode in particular which explores toxic masculinity and gaming culture.
The new series of Black Mirror, which was released on Netflix on April 10, features a sequel for the first time in its history. USS Callister: Into Infinity follows on from USS Callister in which socially awkward developer Robert Daly, played by Jesse Plemons, traps digital clones of his co-workers in a Star Trek-inspired virtual world, where he controls them as an all-powerful captain.
Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, Billy Magnussen, Milanka Brooks, Osy Ikhile, and Paul G. Raymond reprise their roles in the USS Callister sequel which will see the crew stranded in the Star Trek-like virtual world, fighting for their survival.
Other cast members returning to the new series of the hit show includes Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry who featured in Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch – a stand-alone film released in 2018 which allowed viewers to make choices that affected the plot.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Netflix shared a composite image with snap shots from USS Callister: Into Infinity. They captioned the post: “Black Mirror. USS Callister: Into Infinity”, and the image is antagonist Robert saying: “I’m a nice guy”.
Fans have flooded the comments section with praise for the sequel episode. @Bjcatar wrote: “This one was my favorite.”, and @MooreDividends added: “I can never watch more than episode. Always need a break afterwards”.
@Ankit_1918 said: “Mind blown by ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’! The crew’s escape and Nanette’s leadership are epic. The episode’s themes of toxic masculinity and gaming culture are so relevant. Can’t get enough of Black Mirror’s thought-provoking storytelling!”
X user @GhostGhostjk said: “I’m telling you, USS Callister spin off would be so sick.”, and @blackonblaxx added: “Black mirror is GREATEST SZN of All Time”.
The dystopian sci-fi thriller, created by Charlie Brooker, first premiered on Channel 4 back in December 2011 and ran for two seasons until Netflix took over in October 2016, acquired the first two seasons and released season three.
Speaking on the series in general, @Prolificness wrote on X: “Just finished the first episode of the new season of #BlackMirror. Definitely gave me OG Black Mirror vibes and was PHENOMENAL.”
@Edokwin replied: “Just started this morning. I skipped to the USS Callister sequel, but I’m loving it. I think this season definitely has the potential to be a real return to form, given all I’m seeing and hearing myself and from others.”
X user @Purpminded420 said: “Common People ended up being one of the saddest and best episodes of the series”, and @Darkerrgrey added: “black mirror’s common people. oh, they started with a banger! this will stay with me.”
@Erwincolcol wrote on X: ““Common People” is a return to Black Mirror’s purest form: dark, depressing, with a little bit of humor. It’s like watching an episode from the series’ first seasons. Charlie Brooker really took it to a whole ‘nother “tier” this time. Solid 5/5”
