Here’s what you need to know:
Netflix’s new crime drama, The Breakthrough, has taken the streaming platform by storm and viewers have been left equally gripped by the tragic true story it is based on
Netflix subscribers are being encouraged to watch a new mini-series based on a gut-wrenching true story.
The series, titled The Breakthrough, has been trending on the streaming platform and is generating buzz online four months after it was released.
Featuring Peter Eggers, Mattias Nordkvist, and Jessica Liedberg, the show delves into a double murder that occurred in Linköping, Sweden, in 2004.
The case was finally solved after 16 years when a genealogist made a breakthrough.
Discussing the series on their TikTok channel, user EccyReviews stated: “Netflix have just added a brand new limited series that is actually based on a true story.
“I’ve just finished binge watching all four episodes. It’s definitely the next thing you should check out. It’s already trending on Netflix.”
In the early 2000s, the small city of Linköping was shaken by a double homicide that was committed in broad daylight.
A child and a woman in her late 50s were brutally stabbed to death. However, with no clear motive or suspect, the case eventually went cold.
Almost two decades later, the police made progress when a genealogist became involved.
The series was directed by Lisa Siwe (The Bridge) and written by Oskar Söderlund (Snabba Cash).
“Though this is a fictional drama series about a crime, it is, above all, a depiction of a human tragedy – where we place our focus on the victims and the investigation rather than the perpetrator,” Siwe told Netflix.
“It’s a story about the compassion and care for one another that is needed to move on when terrible things happen.”
The show draws inspiration from a book bearing the same title, written by journalist Anna Bodin and genealogist Peter Sjölund.
Screenwriter Söderlund shared his thoughts with Netflix: “When I read the book The Breakthrough, I was struck by the fact that there was such strong human destinies behind this massive murder investigation: police officers who refuse to give up, relatives who wanted answers and last but not least the genealogist who finally came up with the solution.”
He added: “In the midst of this tragedy, there are people who refuse to give up, who’re struggling to move on and whose whole life is marked by what happened.”
Social media reactions to a TikTok video about the series have been positive. One user commented: “I just saw this. It was great.”
Another added their praise, stating: “Watched it fantastic .. now I’m watching Hounds Hill.” A third chimed in with approval, noting, “It’s really interesting and not too bad with the dubbing.”
