The victim has now been named as Martin Shaw after the attack in Oldham
A suspect has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was ‘bundled into a car and attacked’ in Oldham.
Greater Manchester Police began investigating an assault after a 45-year-old man was reportedly bundled into a grey Audi on Ashton Road, near the junction with Kent Street in Hathershaw, back on September 10, 2023.
The force said the man was driven away and assaulted before being taken back home. He later attended Royal Oldham Hospital in a critical condition.
Tragically, the victim died as a result of his injuries almost two months later, on November 4, 2023.
He has now been named by police as Martin Shaw. A murder investigation has been taking place in the time since Mr Shaw’s death.
A 36-year-old man has now been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody for police questioning this morning (April 24).
In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: “We have arrested a man on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of Martin Shaw in Oldham in 2023 and he remains in custody for questioning.
“Martin was assaulted in September 2023 but sadly died in November that year.”
As officers appealed for information in the days following the assault, Detective Inspector Victoria Wade said the incident was believed to be a ‘targeted attack’.
Residents and workers in the area told the Manchester Evening News they had been unaware of what happened until police arrived at their doors, asking for information and video footage.
A takeaway worker on Ashton Road said: “It’s just a main, busy road. It’s used as a main road. It’s not common to have this sort of incident, especially on this road.”
Others described the attack as ‘disgusting’ and ‘vicious’. A resident living close to the scene added: “It’s shocking. I walk there on that road all the time.”
