Quick overview:
Micah Richards made a sharp exit midway through a CBS broadcast after colleagues Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher cracked up at one interviewee’s sharp comment
Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram left Micah Richards red-faced following Wednesday’s Champions League action. And the jibe was so severe that the Premier League champion had to leave the CBS set in despair.
The punditry team – consisting of Richards, Arsenal icon Thierry Henry and Liverpool favourite Jamie Carragher – interviewed Thuram after his Inter side advanced to the Champions League semi-finals. A 2-2 draw at home to Bayern Munich in their quarter-final second leg secured a 4-3 aggregate victory and set up another two-legged clash with Barcelona.
France striker Thuram – whose father, Lilian, played alongside Henry and won the World Cup with him in 1998 – is known to refer to the Arsenal legend as “Uncle.” The Nerazzurri star explained why this is the case at Richards’ request before the conversation shifted to the studio’s fashion choices.
“Thierry, you have a very, very, very nice suit tonight,” said the 27-year-old unprompted, per The Mirror. It was at this point Carragher interjected, asking Thuram for his opinion on the suits he and Richards were wearing.
Both stood up from behind the studio desk to give the Inter forward a better view. However, his evaluation of their outfits was not what Richards had anticipated.
Thuram confirmed he could see both Englishmen but added Micah’s outfit looked “a bit tight.” This was enough to send Richards off the deep end and caused him to abruptly exit the stage.
Henry and Carragher were left in disbelief as the former gave a nod of approval to the ribbing from his ‘nephew’. Carragher, on the other hand, may have been relieved to sidestep a similar skewering.
Attempting to alleviate the awkwardness, Thuram promptly re-engaged Richards in the banter. The former Borussia Monchengladbach star gave his apologies with the words: “Why is it always you, Micah? I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”
Former Manchester City star Richards – who made 245 appearances for the Sky Blues – was quick to chime in with his agreement. The 36-year-old quickly quipped back: “Why always me? I can’t catch a break.”
It’s become a familiar scene for the ex-England defender to be the target of humour in his broadcasting jobs. However, he typically gets teased by his fellow pundits rather than the guests they might be interviewing.
Regardless, Thuram seemed indifferent to traditional boundaries and did not hesitate to take a playful jab at his interviewer. And the tensions between the duo could continue if Thuram and his Inter side progress further in Europe this term.
Inter will begin their Champions League semi-final with a trip to Barcelona on April 30. Thuram leads Inter with 14 Serie A goals but will aim for a breakthrough in Europe after scoring only three times in the tournament so far this season.
