Mason Greenwood has performed well for Marseille since completing a permanent move to France from Manchester United in the summer.

Greenwood left the Reds last summer in a £26.6million (€31.6m) deal after spending the previous season on loan at Spanish La Liga side Getafe. The winger has 17 goals and four assists across all competitions, with Marseille sitting second in France’s Ligue 1 but 22 points behind champions Paris Sanit-Germain after 28 matches.

The 23-year-old has not played for United since January 2022 after being arrested. Charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023 when key witnesses withdrew their cooperation.

Below is the latest on Greenwood’s time at Marseille…

Greenwood hits back

Mason Greenwood responded to the chatter about his work ethic and future at Marseille with a stunning goal in their 3-2 victory over Toulouse on Sunday. The ex-Manchester United striker had faced scrutiny over his commitment and productivity both in training and match situations.

French media outlet La Provence reported that Greenwood’s lack of effort has been a source of frustration for his Marseille teammates, with one insider stating: “His team-mates are tired of waiting for the stroke of genius. They’re making the effort, and they need to see him put on his overalls.”

This follows comments from Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi just weeks earlier, who expressed his expectations for Greenwood to improve, saying he needs to be “more consistent, sacrifice more and be more determined”.

De Zerbi praise

Mason Greenwood ‘has the qualities’ to join the pantheon of Marseille greats, according to manager Roberto De Zerbi.

“Greenwood is a natural talent,” he said following the 3-2 win over Toulouse. “All the credit goes to his mother and father. And I’m here to help him become more complete.

“When he needs a hug, a word of support, I gladly give it. And when I need to push him to give more, I have to do that too because that’s my job. I would especially like to help him be remembered, in this stadium and by these supporters, as one of the greatest players to have played here at the Vélodrome.

“There have been so many great players here, but I think Greenwood has the qualities to be remembered that way. And I’m trying to help him progress.”

The comments may well suggest De Zerbi is keen to keep hold of Greenwood for the foreseeable future at Marseille, despite persistent rumours linking him with a move away.

Exit rumour

Former Poland international Ludovic Obraniak has claimed via le10sport that Greenwood will leave Marseille this summer – but shot down the player’s chances of making a return to the Premier League.

“Greenwood had a very satisfactory first part of the season and is now delivering an extremely average second part,” Obraniak said. “He’s still persona non grata in England, and no Premier League club wants him. Marseille took a big risk by signing him.”

The pundit acknowledged Greenwood’s contributions but questioned his mindset, adding: “He’s a soloist. He’s producing the numbers – 17 goals, three assists – but I don’t see him committing in the long term. He’s using Marseille to relaunch his career elsewhere.”
