Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has revealed that Marcus Rashford’s future at the club “depends on the next weeks” after the on loan Manchester United forward impressed against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Trailing 3-1 from the first leg in Paris last week, Villa found themselves 5-1 down on aggregate after Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes put Luis Enrique’s team 2-0 in front on the night.

But after Youri Tielemans pulled one back for Villa before half-time, Rashford inspired a dramatic second-half fightback. His pace and threat in behind caused PSG a number of issues.

John McGinn made it 2-2 on the night with a long-range effort before Rashford produced a piece of magic in the build-up to Villa’s third goal. He skipped past two players on the right and pulled the ball back for Ezri Konsa to fire home from close-range.

Although Villa ended up losing 5-4 on aggregate and crashing out of the Champions League, Rashford received praise for his performance post-match.

The 27-year-old is on loan until the end of the season and Villa have a £40million option to buy him from United. However, a decision on whether to purchase the England international is yet to be decided.

“It is difficult to plan it now,” Emery said. “He [Rashford] is feeling better and he played a fantastic match. We are very happy. If he is happy, we are happy. It depends on the circumstances for now and the next weeks.”

Meanwhile, ex-United forward Wayne Rooney hailed Rashford and felt he was “fantastic” throughout the match vs PSG.

Speaking on Amazon Prime Video, Rooney said: “I have to say, I have to give a massive shout out to Marcus Rashford. I thought he was fantastic, the Rashford we’ve seen over the years.

“His skill, his ability, getting at players, driving at players and then his awareness to pull the ball back.

“When this goal goes in, you can feel the atmosphere and the Villa players get that belief that they can get back in the tie. They probably just ran out of energy. They gave a lot to that 20 minutes and PSG saw the game out well.

“But it was a fantastic effort from all the Villa players, the fans got right behind them and, unfortunately, they just fell short.”
