Marcus Rashford has been given a brutal rating from French outlet L’Equipe following Aston Villa’s 3-1 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

The forward left Manchester United to join the Midlands club on loan in the January transfer window after he was frozen out of the squad by head coach Ruben Amorim at the end of last year. Rashford has rediscovered some good form under Unai Emery and was even recalled to the England squad last month.

However, the 27-year-old endured a difficult night in Paris on Wednesday night as Villa were dismantled by Europe’s in-form team, PSG. Luis Enrique’s side knocked out Premier League leaders Liverpool in the round of 16, but were left stunned when Morgan Rogers fired Villa in front on the 35-minute mark.

PSG quickly turned things around courtesy of goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, before Nuno Mendes made it 3-1 in stoppage time at the end of the second-half. The result arguably puts the semi-finals out of reach for Villa, who host the second leg next week.

French outlet L’Equipe, who are well-known for their brutal player ratings, were less than impressed with Rashford’s display at the Parc des Princes. Along with his teammates John McGinn and Ezri Konsa, the on-loan United man was awarded a measly 4/10 for his performance.

Surprisingly, that wasn’t even the lowest score of the night as the ratings for Jacob Ramsey and Matty Cash were even more savage at 3/10. The report said: “The right-back had clearly been targeted as the weak point in Villa’s defense. And rightly so. Struggling from kickoff until his exit, he was unable to win a duel and showed signs of nervousness with the ball.”

Manager Unai Emery was also rated a 3/10, as the report said: “His team refused to play and was understandably punished. Furthermore, the Spanish coach failed to find any solutions to secure his team’s right wing.”

Rashford and his teammate will have to score twice at Villa Park without response from PSG in the second leg next week if they are to take the tie to extra-time. That said, the Champions League is not the only shot at silverware Villa have this season as they are set to contest an FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace later this month.

Despite the rating from L’Equipe, Rashford’s loan spell at Villa has been a resounding success so far as he has scored three goals and registered four assists in his 13 appearances across all competitions. Two of those goals came in their FA Cup quarter-final victory over Preston North End at the end of March.
