Here’s what you need to know:
Manchester United stars rallied around Marcus Rashford on Instagram after his emotional post following Aston Villa’s dramatic late defeat
Several Manchester United players have shown their support for Marcus Rashford after Aston Villa were dealt a big blow to their Champions League hopes on Tuesday night.
Rashford’s penalty goal against Manchester City looked set to earn Villa a vital point against the current Premier League champions. Unfortunately for Unai Emery’s side, a 94th-minute Matheus Nunes winner put a dent in the Birmingham club’s Champions League push.
The England international was taken off on the 76th minute mark to be replaced by Ollie Watkins. Since Rashford joined Villa on loan, the striking pair have been going back-and-forth on who starts matches, a decision Emery has yet to take a firm stance on
Following their defeat at the Eithad, Rashford posted a heartfelt message on Instagram saying: “Losing a game in the last minute was tough, but we have to stay focused and be ready for the next game.”
The on-loan Villa star sounded emotional after the loss against his former noisy neighbours and many Man United players, past and present, have supported Rashford on his Instagram post.
Bruno Fernandes, Andre Onana, Diogo Dalot, Antony, Joshua Zirkzee and many other Reds liked Rashford’s social media post.
The conversations surrounding the 27-year-old still regard his future. Villa have an option to buy Rashford for £40m in the summer, but European clubs like Barcelona remain interested in the forward.
A potential swap deal with Watkins has been discounted by the Rashford camp. Champions League football is a key factor when it comes to the England international choosing his future team, and Villa’s defeat last night has reduced their chances of securing top-flight European football.
Emery has spoken on Rashford’s time with Villa and stated: “I am so happy with him, he is performing very well. His adaptation has been quick, his commitment to the team and his team mates and the process we are doing together.
“He has been really important for us and he has to keep going. Now, on Saturday, hopefully he can help us again and, like everybody, be ready and focused on this match.”
