Manchester United couldn’t complete a league double over rivals Manchester City after the two sides drew
Manchester United were forced to settle for a point in their encounter with Manchester City on Sunday as they moved clear of the bottom three but couldn’t make significant ground on the European places.
Ruben Amorim’s side were denied a league double against their local rivals, and his third of the season, during a dismal encounter at Old Trafford.
The hosts had the best share of the chances with Alejandro Garnacho failing to get the desired contact from close-range in the first-half.
During the opening exchanges, the Argentine thought he won his side a penalty after combining with Rasmus Hojlund. However, it was adjudged that he was brought down by Ruben Dias outside the box – with the Portuguese shown a yellow card.
Manuel Ugarte came close in the second-half with his right-footed volley narrowing wide.
But neither side could find the breakthrough and were forced to share the spoils, leaving United 14 points off the European places – with City occupying the UEFA Conference League spot as it stands.
There is still hope for United to earn qualification for Europe, however, they will have to do it by winning the Europa League.
