Man Utd want to sign Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves this summer and the attacker a release clause that could be activated.

Manchester United want to sign Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves, but will have to sell players to trigger his £62.5million release clause.

Cunha is interested in a switch to Old Trafford and he has been identified as an ideal attacking recruit for Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system. The 25-year-old could fill one of the No. 10 roles in that system and has been a key player in the same position for Wolves under Vitor Pereira this season.

United are expected to face competition for Cunha’s signature but might have stolen a march on their rivals in targeting a player considered something of a maverick, having been involved in several disciplinary incidents this season.

But he is also a creative forward and would bring goals and that eye for creating opportunities to a stuttering attack, with Amorim keen to add a playmaker and a striker to his squad this summer. United have failed to score in 13 of their Premier League fixtures this term.

Cunha played against United for Wolves at the weekend and was spotted in discussion with fellow Brazilian Casemiro at the end of the game, while TV cameras also saw Amorim put his hand around the forward and engage him in conversation when heading down the tunnel.

The former Atletico Madrid forward has netted 28 goals in 77 Premier League games for Wolves and has enjoyed an outstanding campaign this term. He scored his first goal for Brazil last month, finding the back of the net in a 4-1 World Cup qualification defeat to Argentina.

Wolves boss Pereira was in the directors’ box at Old Trafford to witness United’s thrilling 5-4 Europa League win against Lyon. Ahead of the weekend’s Premier League clash, Amorim was asked about the opposition and praised Cunha.

“I think he’s doing an amazing job,” Amorim said of Pereira. “He’s playing a 3-4-3, he’s doing quite well! He’s changing some players, he has real quality players – Cunha and all these guys, they have real quality. They are fresh.

“So we know it’s going to be a tough match and we are going to need a lot from our supporters. I know it is a bad thing to ask anything this season from our fans but we need them on Sunday.”

When pressed on Cunha and possible interest from United, Amorim replied: “I just gave the example because I remembered about Matheus. He’s scoring a lot of goals. Just that.”
