Quick overview:
Former Manchester United talent Hannibal Mejbri has helped Burnley secure promotion from the Championship to the Premier League
Congratulations are in order for former Manchester United talent Hannibal Mejbri, who has secured promotion to the Premier League in his first season with Burnley.
Scott Parker’s side will be in celebration mode this Easter Monday having just beaten Sheffield United 2-1 at Turf Moor. With that result, the Clarets in second with 94 points cannot be caught by the Blades in third, who are on 86 points, as both clubs now have just two matches to go.
Hannibal played the entire 90 minutes of the match on Monday, even drawing the foul from Anel Ahmedhodzic that allowed Josh Brownhill to settle the game from the penalty spot.
Man United can be pleased from afar with the contributions of a player they raised from the age of 16. Now 22, the attacking midfielder has 36 appearances in all competitions with one goal scored and four assists provided.
He is now guaranteed a reunion, or two, in the 2025/26 campaign as Burnley will now face Ruben Amorim’s side both home and away in the Premier League.
The Manchester Evening News understands mechanisms in place for United to resign Hannibal from Burnley, should they wish to.
Last summer when he was sold for a fixed £5.4m fee, potentially rising to £9.4m, MEN Sport reported United were able to insert a buy-back clause into the deal.
What’s more, they also included a matching rights clause. This means if a rival were to take interest in Hannibal as far as making an offer, Old Trafford chiefs would be informed and have the opportunity to present an equal offer to Burnley and the player.
Both routes would ensure easier passage for the Tunisian back to the club if that is what he would want, though if not Man United would still be covered if they did not make an attempt and he moved elsewhere.
Hannibal’s deal with the Clarets also had 50 percent sell-on clause, meaning United would take a percentage of any fee he commands should he leave Burnley and not return to Old Trafford. That said, the percentage is understood to reduce over time across his three-year deal at Turf Moor.
