An obligation clause for Jadon Sancho to join Chelsea on a permanent basis in the summer transfer window has now become active, according to reports.

Sancho joined Chelsea from manchester United on a season-loan back in the summer. The loan includes an obligation to buy for a £25 million fee in the summer transfer window

The winger has failed to really make a mark at Stamford Bridge this season, failing to establish himself as a regular in Enzo Maresca’s starting lineup. In his 35 appearances for the club, he has scored three goals, including the equaliser in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Ipswich.

It has led to reports that Chelsea could opt against signing the player this summer, and instead pay a £5 million penalty fee to United and send the player back to Old Trafford.

Sancho was back on the bench for Sunday’s Premier League game against Fulham, but played 45 minutes as the Blues came from behind to secure a 2-1 win. That win has now reportedly left Chelsea with a decision to make ahead of the summer window.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the obligation to buy clause in Sancho’s loan deal with Chelsea becomes active only if Chelsea finish above 15th place in the Premier League this season. The win against Fulham moved the side up to fifth place in the table and guaranteed that they will finish above 15th at the end of the campaign, therefore activating the obligation to buy clause.

The report adds that Chelsea will make the decision on whether to pay the £25 million fee and keep Sancho, or to pay the £5 million penalty and send him back to United, at the end of the season.

Explaining why Sancho was named on the bench against Fulham, Maresca spoke about the option at his disposal. “He is doing well but at this moment we have him, Madueke and Pedro Neto, and also Tyrique (George) who can play wide,” he told BBC Sport.

“In this moment they are all good so it is easy for me to decide but also easy to change because the ones who are out are doing well.”
