Update: Manchester United get double suspension boost after dramatic Europa League win vs Lyon News

Man United advanced to the Europa League semi-finals with a 7-6 aggregate victory over Lyon.

Midfield duo Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro will be available for Manchester United’s Europa League semi-final first leg against Athletic Bilbao after avoiding yellow cards against Lyon.

United progressed to the semi-finals of the competition on Thursday night with a dramatic 5-4 victory over the French side at Old Trafford. Goals from Ugarte, Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire sealed an astonishing 7-6 aggregate victory for Ruben Amorim’s men.

Victory means United have kept their hopes of salvaging something from what has otherwise been a forgettable season and securing Champions League qualification for next season alive.

Both Ugarte and Casemiro went into the game walking a disciplinary tightrope after accumulating two yellow cards earlier in United’s Europa League campaign. Ugarte earned his second yellow card of the competition in last week’s 2-2 draw at the Groupama Stadium.

However, both players got through the second clash with Lyon without being cautioned.

Europa League rules state that any player who amasses three yellow cards before the completion of the quarter-finals must serve a one-match ban.

A player who accumulates more than three yellow cards before the cut-off point will serve an additional one-match ban for every odd number of bookings they rack up (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc).

However, all yellow cards that have been accumulated in the competition are wiped out ahead of the start of the semi-finals, meaning every player involved in the last-four of the competition starts the round with a clean slate, lowering the risk of missing out on an appearance in the final because of a yellow card-related suspension.
