Quick overview:
Man Utd play Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday and Chido Obi looks set to return to the first-team squad.
Chido Obi did not play for Manchester United’s Under-21s against Reading on Friday night, which points to his inclusion in the first-team squad to face Newcastle in the Premier League.
Obi was named on the bench for the Manchester derby, but he was not registered to play in the Europa League, so he did not travel to play Lyon at the Groupama Stadium on Thursday.
The exciting youngster was also missing from first-team training at Carrington on Wednesday.
However, Obi wasn’t in the U21 squad to face Reading on Friday, which suggests Ruben Amorim will include him in the senior squad to play Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Sunday.
Obi was last given a first-team appearance against Leicester City before the international break, and he last played in an academy fixture for the U21s against Nottingham Forest on April 7.
The 17-year-old scored a brace against Nottingham Forest at Leigh Sports Village and his second goal, a brilliantly taken solo effort which started at the halfway line, went viral online.
Rasmus Hojlund disappointed against Lyon earlier in the week and could be dropped against Newcastle, but Joshua Zirkzee is not a natural striker and has looked better in the No.10 role.
Obi replaced Hojlund in the second half against Fulham in the FA Cup fifth round at Old Trafford. Amorim admitted that it was a “good night” for Obi, despite United losing the game.
