Chido Obi made four substitute appearances for Man United in February and March but was an unused substitute in the recent derby.

Chido Obi is set for more playing time in Manchester United’s Premier League run-in as Ruben Amorim prioritises the Europa League.

United progressed to the semi-finals of the Europa League with an extraordinary 5-4 extra-time victory over Lyon on Thursday night and host Wolves on Sunday.

Sixteenth-placed Wolves are only three points behind United, who have already lost their joint-most amount of fixtures in the Premier League era and have six games left.

The Europa League offers salvation for United this season in that they would qualify for the Champions League if they win the competition for the second time.

United play Wolves and Bournemouth away before they travel to Athletic Bilbao for their semi-final first leg on May 1. Obi and Harry Amass became the latest academy graduates to debut in recent months, with the latter making his first start in the 4-1 defeat at Newcastle United.

Obi, 17, was not added to United’s Europa League squad and is ineligible for the Bilbao matches. The Danish youngster has not appeared for United since the 3-0 win at Leicester City on March 16 but, with Joshua Zirkzee out for the rest of the season, Obi is poised to make his full debut in the coming weeks.

“I have to see it,” Amorim said of the probable rotation he will exercise. “Players like (Diogo) Dalot – they are always ready but today he was really tired. The guys that are recent to have an injury, we will try to save them. We will see tomorrow.

“It’s not the best moment or the best season to put some kids to play because again they need a strong base to really show what they can do, but in this moment we need to do it. And sometimes you have surprises.

“Ayden (Heaven) just played – and I can be honest, because we had a lot of injuries in that moment – but today I think of Ayden as my player. So when he’s ready, he’s facing competition in the team and he’s ready to play, so you don’t know.

“Amass did really well today, so we don’t know. Chido, when he played he played quite well. It’s a difficult moment, it’s not the right moment for the kids to play, but if we have to do it we will do it.

“Will Obi get more minutes? Yes, I think so. Yes.”

Amorim clarified that Victor Lindelof will be available after he was forced to leave Old Trafford at half-time against Lyon to address an urgent family matter. Lindelof was preparing to come on to replace Noussair Mazraoui, who also had to depart at half-time due to an entirely separate personal issue.

“He (Lindelof)’s available,” Amorim added. “He has personal issues, like Nous, so we had to let him go but everything is okay now. I know that football is really important but there are things that are more important and then they will be ready to face the next game.

“Both (issues arose) during the game and sometimes you don’t control these things. Everything happened this season! But everything is okay now.”

Andre Onana performed on his return to the United side in the madcap second leg against Lyon. The goalkeeper embraced Amorim after Harry Maguire’s 121st-minute winner and the United coach was pleased with Onana’s improvement.

“I think he did really well. He did a good game, he has to continue to do good games. I’m really happy for him because it was a tough moment but let’s move forward and now he has to be ready for the next games.”
