Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has invited golfer and United fan Rory McIlroy to parade his Masters trophy at Old Trafford following his historic victory at Augusta.

McIlroy held his nerve in a dramatic play-off against Justin Rose to clinch his very first Masters crown and claim the fabled green jacket on Sunday.

In doing so, the Northern Irishman, 35, became the first European golfer to complete the ‘Grand Slam’, adding to his US Open, PGA Championship and Open Championship titles. The Masters was the title that had been evading McIlroy for so long.

To celebrate his triumph, Amorim wants McIlroy to visit Old Trafford with the trophy, admitting he wants to meet him.

In a video message recorded at Carrington, Amorim said: “Hi Rory, congratulations for The Masters and I want to invite you to Old Trafford to show your trophy.

“It is really important to us in this moment. You achieved something that a lot of people thought would be impossible and we want that feeling in our stadium.

“So, I hope to see you soon at Old Trafford and to meet you.”

After winning The Open back in 2014, McIlroy was invited to Old Trafford to parade the ‘Claret Jug’ trophy ahead of United’s 2014/15 season opener against Swansea City.

Following his victory at Augusta at the weekend, McIlroy was asked if he would don the famous green jacket at Old Trafford.

Answering that question, he said: “If it can inspire some better play, absolutely.”
