Man United have confirmed plans to try and create a special atmosphere for Thursday night’s Europa League clash with Lyon at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have announced plans to unveil a ‘tifo’ banner in an Old Trafford first ahead of Thursday night’s massive Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon.

United will welcome the French side to M16 with the ambition of progressing to the semi-finals of the competition after last week’s first leg finished 2-2 at the Groupama Stadium.

United looked set to head back to England with a first leg advantage after Joshua Zirkzee headed them into an 88th-minute lead, completing an impressive turnaround, but Rayan Cherki capitalised on an Andre Onana mistake in injury time to ensure the contest finished all square.

The Europa League is United’s leading priority heading into the final weeks of the season after a disastrous domestic campaign. They currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, meaning they need to win the Europa League to qualify for Europe for next season.

With the club determined to advance to the semi-finals and book a date with either Rangers or Athletic Bilbao next month, they have confirmed they are going to attempt to enhance the atmosphere at Old Trafford against Lyon by unveiling a ‘tifo’ in front of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand ahead of kick-off.

The ‘tifo’ will be raised from the ground to the roof, in front of the halfway line, creating what United have described as a ‘spectacular moment’.

The club has said they have worked with fan representatives on the idea and image. Details of the design, however, are being kept under wraps.

Furthermore, red-and-white pyrotechnics will also appear adjacent to the banner. The display will be bigger than the one seen ahead of the 4-1 win over Real Sociedad last month.
