Manchester United will play post-season friendlies in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, which are scheduled for just days after the conclusion of the Premier League season.

There are concerns about the increasing workload being faced by players, but United have agreed post-season friendlies against ASEAN All Stars and Hong Kong, China to generate cash.

United will play ASEAN All Stars in Kuala Lumpur on May 28, just three days after playing their final Premier League game of the season against Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

Two days later, United will play in Hong Kong before giving their players a chance for a break.

It’s understood the post-season trip will generate roughly £9million and United CEO Omar Berrada said: “We appreciate the amazing level of support that Manchester United enjoys around the world.

“And this summer, we are delighted to deliver a schedule that provides our fans in Asia, Scandinavia and the United States the opportunity to connect with the club and watch the men’s first team play live in local settings.

“Importantly, Tour fixtures drive significant additional revenue which help make the club stronger, allowing us to keep investing in success on the pitch.

“They also create unique opportunities for us to collaborate with our valued commercial partners, and to deepen relationships with our fans in regions such as Asia and the US.”

Former United player Raphael Varane raised concerns about the increased workload in the summer of 2023, saying the schedule was at a “dangerous level for players’ physical and mental well-being.”

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle played a post-season friendly in Australia – just three days after the Premier League ended – last summer and received criticism for overstretching their players.

United are working with Profit and Sustainability Rules and such trips could become the norm.

United’s post-season friendlies:

  • 28 May | ASEAN All Stars, Bukit Jalil Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.
  • 30 May | Hong Kong, China, Hong Kong Stadium, Hong Kong.

United’s confirmed fixtures in pre-season:

  • 27 July | West Ham, MetLife Stadium, New Jersey.
  • 31 July | Bournemouth, Soldier Field, Chicago.
  • 3 August | Everton, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta.
