Quick overview:
Latest Manchester United transfer news with an update on the club’s summer goalkeeper search
Manchester United are reportedly interested in a move for Torino’s Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. Ruben Amorim’s side are set to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks this summer.
Milinkovic-Savic, 28, has been one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A this season, having conceded just 34 goals from 31 matches. The Serbian has made the most saves in Italy’s top-tier (115) and has attracted interest from a number of potential suitors around Europe.
According to La Stampa, as relayed by CuoreToro, United are one of those that are keen on re-signing Milinkovic-Savic, nine years since he left Old Trafford. It’s stated that Milinkovic-Savic has a release clause of £17.1million, which will be valid until the end of July.
A move to Old Trafford would signal a return to Manchester for Milinkovic-Savic, who spent 18 months in the club’s academy between 2014 and 2015. He arrived at United in May 2014 from Vojvodina for £1.5m but remained at the Serbian club on loan.
However, after failing to get a work permit, Milinkovic-Savic was released by United in November 2015 and he signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Polish side Lechia Gdansk. He didn’t make a single first-team appearance for United.
But Milinkovic-Savic, who was 19 when he left United, has enjoyed an established career in the top-flight of Italian football across the last couple of years. His performances for Torino have caught the eye and a return to United would be described as a ‘turning point’ of his career.
As of now, Torino owner Urbano Cairo wants a fee of £17.1m to sell their star performer – the same as his release clause. United, however, value Milinkovic-Savic at £10.3m.
Milinkovic-Savic’s current contract runs out in the summer of 2026, but Torino have the option to extend it by another year. Manchester City have also been linked with a move.
United are anticipated to dip into the summer market for a new No.1. Andre Onana was rested for United’s trip to Newcastle United on Sunday after making two mistakes against Lyon. Altay Bayindir deputised, but he didn’t cover himself in glory after his misplaced pass led to Newcastle’s fourth goal.
After missing the game at St James’ Park, Onana is set to return to the XI to face Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final second-leg on Thursday. Explaining his decision, Amorim said: “I think as a former coach and a player, I try to do things that can help a player in this situation.
“We talk about managing players physically, but we also have to manage them mentally. This week, my thinking was to put [Andre] Onana to play.”
Amorim was also asked about whether United need to sign a new goalkeeper this summer. In response to that question, he said: “We need to improve every position, GK is the same, we can work with Andre [Onana]. He already proved he is a top player.
“We are going to make that evaluation for any position in squad. My record is worst in team. I am also underperforming.”
