Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay reacted to their dramatic Europa League progression
Scott McTominay offered the perfect response after Manchester United booked their place in the Europa League semi-final in their dramatic win over Lyon. United supporters went through the mill at Old Trafford on Thursday as they blew a two-goal lead before staring down elimination until late goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire secured a memorable win.
The encounter was finely poised going into the second-leg at the Theatre of Dreams after Rayan Cherki netted a late equaliser in the reverse fixture in France to earn a 2-2 draw.
Ruben Amorim’s side raced into a two-goal lead thanks to goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot rounded off a dominant first-half display.
However, a six-minute salvo from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico restored parity on the night and on aggregate. The visitors took an unlikely lead, despite being reduced to 10 men after Tolisso was shown a second yellow card, after goals on either side of the interval in extra-time from Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette.
But there was enough time for drama after Mainoo and Maguire netted goals in stoppage time to turn the tie on its head and snatch progression from Lyon.
McTominay showed that he still keeps track of United’s results from afar as he enjoys the next chapter of his career in Serie A with Napoli.
And he provided the perfect response to Maguire and one many supporters can relate to after the drama on Thursday night.
Replying to the defender’s Instagram post, he posted a clapping and a shocked face emoji with six exclamation marks.
“I was watching the 99 documentary for inspiration,” Amorim told TNT Sports following the dramatic win.
“The team were tired. At 4-2, you think it is over, but here it is never over.
“Here everything is possible.
“This is one type of moment that can change a lot of things.
“Sometimes we just look at the tactical and physical aspect. But these moments can change a lot in the players’ minds.
“We need to be really focused on the Europa League and take a risk with the kids in the league.
“Fans have to understand that we have to focus on the Europa League,” the Portuguese added.
