Kobbie Mainoo has received support from six Manchester United teammates after making his awaited return to action following an injury lay-off.

The 19-year-old featured in the 2-2 Europa League draw at Lyon on Thursday night. Mainoo is fit again following a two-month absence with a muscular injury.

He missed a total of seven Premier League games, including the stalemate in the Manchester derby last weekend, but came on as a second-half substitute against the French side. Replacing Alejandro Garnacho late on, Mainoo has since fired a message on Instagram.

The England midfielder posted a series of pictures ranging from the game to training, along with the caption: “Happy to be back out there with the boys, let’s finish the job back home,” followed by a stadium emoji.

Reds captain Bruno Fernandes, Leny Yoro, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen have all liked Mainoo’s post. Joshua Zirkzee meanwhile, commented: “Ly [love you].”

The midfielder has struggled this season and spent a combined four months out injured with two separate muscular injuries. Amorim has played Mainoo in midfield, as a playmaker and even up front.

Amorim has previously highlighted the 19-year-old’s importance to the squad. “We are really happy to have more options and an option like Kobbie Mainoo, with the quality that he has,” he said.

“He can play in different positions. He has already played as a six, as an eight, as a 10, so we are really pleased to have Kobbie Mainoo but we have to be careful.

“We need Kobbie fit and fresh.” Mainoo had a remarkable season last year, bouncing back from a four-month ankle injury layoff to make his full Premier League debut in November, before going on to score the winner in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.
